Diamond Dawgs Even Series, Top Arizona 4-3

Apr 27, 2024

SEATTLE – Washington received strong pitching all day in its matchup with Arizona on Saturday and came away with a series-tying victory, topping the Wildcats 4-3 at Husky Ballpark.

Calvin Kirchoff earned the win, allowing three runs over 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Sam Boyle posted a pair of shutout frames, while Grant Cunningham collected four outs to secure his first save of the season.

Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first as Jeter Ybarra's single to left-center cashed in on Braeden Terry's one-out double. However, the Wildcats responded with a run in the second to quickly tie things up.

Arizona plated two in the fourth to seize the lead but a 2-out error scored a run and kept the bottom half of the frame alive and Aiva Arquette made the Wildcats pay with a game-tying RBI single dumped into left, knotting the score at three runs apiece.

AJ Guerrero led off the next frame with a single up the middle and Cam Clayton came through with a double to the opposite field, putting the Dawgs back on top.

Arizona put runners at the corners with 2 outs in the eighth but the Huskies made the call to the pen for their closer and Cunningham got the punchout to end the threat.

Andrew Cain led off with a single in the ninth to put the pressure back on Cunningham but the righty flamethrower delivered, retiring the top of Arizona's lineup in order to lock down the win and setup a series showdown for Sunday.

The Huskies and Wildcats will play their rubber match at 1:05 p.m. PT. The game will be available for streaming through Washington Live Stream 2.
